An EAC code looks like filing metadata — a two-digit number attached to a client file. It is closer to a gate. The code determines which of your auditors may sign the report, feeds the audit day calculation, and decides whether your accreditation covers that client at all. Get it wrong at quoting time and the error propagates through the whole cycle.
What the code classifies, and what it does not
The EAC scheme groups economic activities into around forty sectors, and accreditation is granted per code, not for the standard in general. A body accredited for ISO 9001 is accredited for ISO 9001 within a defined set of codes. Certifying outside them is certifying outside your accreditation — one of the more serious findings an accreditation body can raise.
What the code does not do is describe the client. It classifies the activity being certified, which is not always the client’s main business. A company that manufactures and also distributes may need two codes, or one, depending on what falls inside the scope. A contract manufacturer is classified by what it makes, not by the sector of whoever buys it. This is where most misclassification starts.
The chain the code sets off
Once the code is set, three things follow automatically. Auditor assignment: your competence records qualify each auditor per scheme and per code, so the pool of people who may lead that audit is decided the moment the code is. Audit duration: some codes carry a higher complexity category, which changes the starting point of the calculation. And certificate content: the scope statement on the certificate has to match the activity the code represents, because that is what a customer of your client will read.
A code corrected late is a cascade: the quote was wrong, the auditor may not have been qualified, the days may not have been enough, and the certificate says something the accreditation does not support. Catching it at the application — before any of that is committed — is worth far more than catching it in technical review, and it is one of the reasons the cycle in Eight agents. One certification cycle. starts at the application rather than at the audit.
